SPORTS MEDICINE DAYS
A Tempo Livre, through the Sports Medicine Center of Guimarães, has promoted scientific activities complemented with credited and professional training.
The Sports Medicine Journeys followed the “Clarification Sessions” held in 2009 and during which themes were considered relevant in the development of processes of practice of physical activity in safety and which involved the participation of about 800 people.

2010
As 1st Medical-Sports Conference in Guimarães took place from 23 to 25 September 2010 at Multiusos de Guimarães.
This initiative by Tempo Livre, carried out through the CMAD - Medical Support Center for Sport, brought together the institutional support of the Guimarães City Council and the Sports Observatory of Guimarães, and its general objective was to promote a scientific activity complemented with credited and professional training.
The 1st Medical-Sports Journeys arose after the “Clarification Sessions” held in 2009, at CMAD, and during which topics were considered relevant in the development of processes of practice of physical activity in safety and which involved the participation of about 800 people.
Framed in the objectives and scope of the mission of the Tempo Livre and, specifically from CMAD, the 1st Medical-Sports Days in Guimarães counted on the participation of specialists from the areas under discussion who explored the different themes in round tables, with a view to reflecting on the following fields of analysis:
- Municipal Management / Sports Process
- Sudden Death in Sports
- Physical Exercise / Health Promotion
- Medical-Sports Examination
- Sports Traumatology
The general program of 1st Medical-Sports Conference in Guimarães included training courses and technical courses for Health Professionals, Sports Agents and Physical Education professionals.
As 1st Medical-Sports Conference in Guimarães they started with a gathering under the theme “The Social Importance of Sport” on September 23 and included a dinner and a visit to the Historic Center of Guimarães, a World Heritage Site.
2012
The Portuguese Society of Sports Medicine and the CMAD / Sports Medicine Center of Guimarães, in a joint organization, promoted the XI National Congress of the Portuguese Society of Sports Medicine and the II Medical-Sports Days of Guimarães.
The XI SPMD National Congress was chaired by Dr. Henrique Jones and the II Medical-Sports Days in Guimarães were chaired by Dr. Rui Vaz. The event was held in the city of Guimarães, from 8 to 10 November 2012, at the Multiusos Pavilion, having joined the Guimarães City Hall, European Capital of Culture and the European City of Sport 2013.
The event was a complementary support, par excellence, to the training process related to Sports Medicine. The XI Congress of the SPMD and the II Medical-Sports Days of Guimarães substantiated the presentation of communications related to Exercise Medicine and Sport and to the pathology associated with Sport, namely sports traumatology; cardiac pathology, chronic diseases in sport, and sport in women, among others supervised by a highly prestigious scientific commission.
In this event, there were pre-congress courses with a lot of formative and scientific relevance in the scope of Exercise Medicine and Sport, namely, the Basic Life Support Course, the Advanced Life Support Course, and the “Emergency Treatment of Players on the pitch / Poles and Responsibilities of a Team Doctor ”.
The Event's Organization promoted a posthumous tribute to Dr. André Castro, doctor at the Sports Medicine Center of Guimarães.
2013
The Guimarães Sports Medicine Center (CMAD) organized, from November 14th to 16th, at the Casa da Memória, the III Medical-Sports Journeys of Guimarães, integrated in the program of Guimarães 2013 - European Sport City.
The initiative was a complementary support, par excellence, to the training process related to Sports Medicine. The program included addressing important topics such as “Children and Sports”, “Hip in Sports”, “Sports Performance in Sports”, “Return to Play”: Advances in Diagnosis and Rehabilitation ”,“ Traumatology in Sports ”, "Nutrition, hydration and ergogenic aids" and "The current context of sports medicine".
Workshop on “Raulvieira” and “Viscosupplementation” were held and posters and free communications were presented.
2015
“Medical-Sports Journeys of Guimarães 2015” took place at Plataforma das Artes. For two days, the participants addressed topics considered relevant in the practice of physical activity in safety.
The Guimarães Sports Medicine Center (CMAD) marked its tenth anniversary with the holding of the fourth edition of the Guimarães Medical-Sports Days, during which the need for sports practice to take place in safe conditions was reaffirmed. In ten years of activity, CMAD has carried out nearly 30 thousand medical-sports examinations and more than one thousand medical assistance to formal and informal sports practitioners.
The sports medical examination is an essential tool for assessing the fitness of sportspeople, being mandatory for athletes, referees and other sports agents to register with their respective federations and recommended for all informal sportspeople (running, cycling, hiking, adventure sports… ). The protocol of the Sports Medical Examination, carried out at CMAD, is the one established by the Sports Institute of Portugal (IDP) and includes nursing consultations and medical consultation and the possible prescription of complementary diagnostic tests by the NHS or other subsystem that the user has.
In addition to the Sports Medical Examination, the Sports Medicine Center of Guimarães has protocols with several specialist doctors that provide advantageous conditions to its users in the following specialties: Cardiology, Dermatology, Physiatrics, Dentistry, Internal Medicine, Nutrition, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Pulmonology and Psychology. The CMAD is open from Monday to Monday to Friday, from 18 pm to 21 pm, with the possibility - by prior arrangement - opening on Saturday and carrying out medical examinations at the club premises.
2019
The Guimarães Sports Medicine Center (CMAD) is organizing the 5th edition of the Guimarães Medical-Sports Days that intend to continue to emphasize the importance of promoting physical activity and preventing injury in sport.
The Journeys will count on the presence of doctors and professionals with reputable experience related to Sports Medicine and Sports Traumatology, seeking in its course to address Sports Medicine - as a main theme - and its intervention in sport.
The initiative will take place at the Hotel Guimarães and at the Academia do Vitória Sport Clube, with the program contemplating the public presentation of the book “Musculoskeletal Pathology for Family Physicians” resulting from a joint work of doctors from the primary health care of ACeS do Alto Ave and of Hospital Senhora da Oliveira.
The presence at the Conference of Psychology and Nutrition professionals will show the importance of these professionals in the context of high competition sports, as well as the participation of Physical Exercise professionals will allow to perceive the relevance of these in the prevention of injuries and in the promotion of good practices with a view to injury reduction.
Tempo Livre
We aim to encourage sports practice in the Municipality of Guimarães, privileging equal opportunities for access to non-competitive sports, developing projects for socio-sports animation and occupation of free time and leisure.
