Data collection relating to the 2023/24 sporting season allowed us to conclude that in the In the municipality of Guimarães there are 9.951 federated practitioners, of which 8.115 are male, representing 81,55% and 1.836 female (18,45%). This is the largest number of practitioners ever observed in Guimarães, representing a growth of 13,39% compared to the 2022/23 season.
The increase in the number of male practitioners is, in absolute terms, almost seven times greater than that seen among females (1026 vs 149). Even so, the increase in female practitioners is also significant (8,83%).
For the first time, 41 sports with federated practice were registered in Guimarães, which represents a new maximum. Football, with 668 new players, once again reinforces its status compared to other sports, bringing together 48,20% of players in Guimarães. In terms of the most practiced sports, in addition to Football (4.796), we have Futsal (444), Cycling (427), Karate (400), Judo (350), Handball (338), Gymnastics (320), Tennis (280 ), Athletics (265) and Hunting Weapons Shooting (245).
There is a decrease in the percentage difference between male practice and female practice, although as has been seen in previous years, it is still very far from the values observed at national level, where close to 30% of practitioners are women.
In terms of growth in sports (considering only those with more than 200 practitioners), Karate leads (+67,36%) followed by Judo (+18,24%) and Football (+16,18%). With an increase in the number of practitioners exceeding 10%, we also have Gymnastics (11,50%), Futsal (10,45%) and Padel (10,26%). Conversely, emphasis is placed on the decrease in the number of participants in Volleyball (-9,70%) and Cycling (-15,28%).
In an analysis by gender, Gymnastics stands out, the modality most practiced by women in Guimarães, with 285 practitioners, followed by Football with 258. With an also notable number of women practicing, Volleyball is observed with 174 practitioners, Karate (122), Figure Skating (98), Handball (97), Equestrian Sports (93) and Judo (89).
Regarding the analysis by level, the increase in the number of practitioners at the Under-10/11 level is very significant, with more than 600 new federated practitioners. This growth is largely due to the increase in practitioners at this level in Football, but also in Gymnastics, Judo and Karate.
By comparing the number of federated practitioners in Guimarães with the national data made available by the IPDJ, it is possible to ascertain that Guimarães has a federated practice rate (6,35%) lower than the national average (7,36%), but higher than the average for the district of Braga (5,56%).
